We had a large project and were trying to get ready for our home to be included in the Modern Atlanta home tour. We met with Matt Johnson, who is the owner, and he spent a good amount of time meeting with us to discuss design and install for our front and back yards. We had sod installed in the backyard, irrigation, lighting, and a fountain and some ornamental plants. The backyard looks beautiful, but was primarily based on our design. Matt’s crew did a good job. The front yard, however, proved to be problematic. Matt switched out ornamental grasses due to availability, and they started to die before the growing season started. The grass is a Cherokee Sedge and it’s just turned into a big mess. We asked Matt to come out and look at it but he ghosted us. It wasn’t until I threatened to write a bad review that he responded to my text messages saying he was not going to come to our property to look at the dead plants, mind you this was within 6 months of planting, and that the reason he wasn’t going to come out was because I wore my pajamas on early mornings when he came out to our home on previous trips (to collect payment checks). First of all, what does that have to do with honoring your contractual obligations? Secondly, why are you even making mental notes about what I’m wearing? I’m a married woman in my late 50s, and thirdly, why would you ghost a client who treated you with respect and kindness at every turn? We never heard from him again. As some other people have written in their reviews: “I would be very careful about hiring Matt Johnson and Captive Landscape Designs.” Matt was extremely unprofessional with us. He did not honor his contract, and he ghosted us when we started to see plants dying within a 6 month period of time. And, for the record, I wore fleece leggings which are not pajamas, and fleece pullover when Matt would come to our home to pick up checks. At no time was I inappropriately dressed. It is very creepy / unsettling that Matt would even mention of my attire. Just be aware, Matt Johnson gives you the impression he is honest and forthright, but in reality he is something different altogether.
Captive Landscapes? One of their trucks was speeding through an Atlanta side street and recklessly plowed over the neighborhood basketball hoop. The driver just kept on going as the basketball hoop crashed to the ground. The Captive Landscapes owner, Matt, has ignored all attempts to be friendly and reasonable in resolving the matter - he wouldn’t even offer an apology. Captive Landscapes is not the type of business that I would work with for any project.
Matt and assistant came out to look at my patio project and offered the work needed to do some repairs and facelift of back patio that we agreed on stating they would provide a quote. A week later, and after calling the company twice and texting Matt directly, I've had no follow up or response. I would think twice before contacting this company.
Captive came out to look at a small repair job I needed done in my lawn. Anna and Matt came looked at the repair and said no problem we can take care of it. A week and a half later they email saying that they are too busy with “Large projects.”
Captive has done a few big projects for us. They also do our weekly maintenance. We’ve always been very happy with everything that they’ve done.
Great service, very knowledgeable , on time and great to work with! Will certainly be working with Matt for future projects. I’ve already recommended captive to several friends at work, we always share information when we have a good experience.
